We plan to analyze the genomic, structural and functional aspects of effectors from selected pathogens, seeking to cover the gaps in our current knowledge and focusing on both novel and recurrent structural and functional themes and mechanisms of virulence. In particular, we want to build on our knowledge of three-dimensional structures of proteins coded by the “virulence genes”, using insights from structural analysis to learn about their mechanisms, evolution but also to find ways to defeat them.
virus from the Coronaviridae family of of enveloped, positive-strand RNA viruses responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic. with over 15M sequenced genomes, it is one of the best studied pathogens. Details of its evolution as seen from the perspective of the 3D structure of its proteins are available on the coronavirus3D website. Click on the image to go to this site.
